Some watches catch your attention with a bright dial or an oversized case. The CIGA Design Time Cipher Gold does it by making you look twice to work out the time.

Its gold-toned mechanism sits against a deep black dial, with a rotating hour disc travelling around the face on a long minute arm. It is an unusual arrangement, and the new colour scheme makes it the obvious centre of attention.

A different way to read the time

The Time Cipher replaces the familiar pair of hands with a wandering-hour display. The long arm points to the minutes around the outside of the dial, completing one full rotation every hour. A numbered disc moves with it, rotating against an indicator to show the hour.

It sounds more complicated than it looks. Once you know where to look, the two readings fall into place. Whether it becomes second nature during everyday wear is something a proper wrist test would have to establish.

What makes the layout appealing is the space around it. There are no extra subdials competing for attention, so you can follow the mechanism as it moves.

Black and gold, with room to breathe

The biggest visual change is the gold-coloured display assembly. Against the black case and dial, it gives the Time Cipher a warmer, slightly dressier character.

CIGA calls the dial finish “Super Black” and says it absorbs 99.4% of incoming light. In the product photographs, that dark backdrop creates a strong sense of separation between the dial and the parts above it.

Those parts receive different finishes. Striping across the minute arm sits alongside polished details on the hour disc and a textured counterweight. Luminous hour numerals help with visibility after dark.

The black steel case carries the contrast further, combining reflective contours with recessed, sandblasted sections. A domed sapphire crystal covers the display.

What powers it?

Inside is CIGA’s automatic CD-08, built on Miyota 9000-series architecture and adapted for this display. The brand lists a 40-hour power reserve, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and an accuracy range of minus 10 to plus 30 seconds a day.

The case measures 11.8mm thick and comes fitted with a black fluororubber strap. Water resistance is rated at 50 metres.

Price and appeal

The CIGA Design Time Cipher Gold is listed at US$899, with a reported European price of €949 including VAT.

Its appeal comes down to how much you enjoy the display. A conventional watch will feel familiar immediately; this one asks for a little curiosity. The gold treatment makes that invitation more tempting, giving the moving assembly enough contrast to appreciate its details without adding clutter.

For someone who already owns the usual three-hand watches and wants something different to look at, the Time Cipher Gold makes an interesting case for itself.
