Casio is marking 30 years of its premium MR-G line with one of its most visually unusual G-Shocks yet. The MRG-B2100HR-1A combines a handcrafted platinum-leaf dial with a multicolored metal bezel and bracelet. Production is limited to 800 individually numbered pieces worldwide.

The watch was developed with Kyoto metal-leaf artist Hiroto Rakusho. His work inspired the design, and he personally applies the platinum leaf to the dial of each watch. Beneath that finish is a lattice pattern that gives the face depth without changing the familiar octagonal outline of the 2100 series.

The color across the bezel and bracelet comes from a more unusual process. Casio uses an ultrashort-pulse laser to create microscopic patterns in the metal. Those patterns reflect light at different angles, producing shifting colors without relying on ordinary pigment. How dramatic the effect looks will depend on the lighting and viewing angle.

There is substantial engineering beneath the decorative finish. Casio uses COBARION for the top bezel, DAT55G for the bracelet, and titanium for the case and other exterior parts. The bezel is assembled from 27 separate components. Despite its elaborate construction, this remains a G-Shock with shock resistance and 200-meter water resistance.

Its everyday features are familiar from other high-end MR-G models: Tough Solar charging, Multi-Band 6 radio timekeeping, Bluetooth connectivity, a high-brightness LED and a sapphire crystal.

The MRG-B2100HR is unlikely to appeal to someone looking for a quiet, understated watch. Its attraction lies in the combination of Japanese handcraft, unusual surface technology and G-Shock durability. With only 800 available, it is aimed squarely at collectors who want a distinctive anniversary piece.

Our take: The handcrafted dial is the most compelling detail. The colorful bracelet will divide opinion, and photographs alone may not show how its finish behaves in natural light. Anyone considering this MR-G should try to see it in person before making a decision at this price.
